Moorefield / Elkins -
Sections of Corridor H Nearly Complete
Corridor H Construction is underway in Elkins and Moorefield. Several sections in the Elkins area are expected to be open for travel by late October.

ELKINS

There are nine projects that make up the segment of Corridor H between US 33 north of Elkins and Kerens, which is east of Elkins on US 219. All nine projects are currently in different phases of construction. (Nine sections were in progress when the suit was filed and stopped construction of Corridor H. Three sections were allowed to continue with construction while a settlement of the lawsuit was negotiated.)

The first project in Elkins ties into existing Route 33. Vecellio & Grogan, Inc. is the contractor. The section is 1.66 miles long and is 90 percent complete. The main line concrete paving, shoulders, crossovers, access roads and final grading have been finished. It is anticipated to be open in late October.

The Trumble Corporation is the contractor working on the second project and it is .78 miles long. This section is also expected to be open in late October.

The J.F. Allen Company is the contractor working on the third section that is now 99 percent complete. It is 1.26 miles long and the signing and striping work are the last elements that remain to be finished. There is an interchange at the end of this section that will tie into Route 1 on the north side of Elkins near Rt. 219. The interchange will allow motorists to travel around Elkins while providing access to Rt. 219 and to Parsons.

(The six sections that follow are in the beginning phases of construction. Construction could not begin on these sections until the Corridor H Settlement Agreement had been reached.)

The contractor on the fourth project is Fairfax Trucking. This section is approximately 65 percent complete and it is 1.5 miles in length. The anticipated completion date is Dec. 1, 2001. Currently, the contractor is building embankments, placing pipes and excavating cuts. The bridge on this section is complete.

The contractor on the fifth project is Kanawha Stone. It is now approximately 25 percent complete. The contractor is currently working on the pier footers and pier stems for one of two bridges and is also excavating cuts, building embankments and installing pipe.

The J. F. Allen Company is the contractor on the sixth project and it is approximately 40 percent complete. Currently the contractor is excavating cuts, putting in pipes and building embankments.

The contractor on the seventh project is Bilco Construction. This section consists of a bridge that is .13 miles long. It is approximately 20 percent complete. The contractor is in the process of pouring pier columns and pier stems and building the abutment.

Vecellio & Grogan, Inc. is the contractor on the eighth project; it is 1.15 miles long. The section includes a bridge that will be built over Route 219 and is in the beginning stages of construction.

Vecellio & Grogan, Inc. is the contractor on the ninth project that is .91 miles long. They are currently working on the pier columns of a bridge. This section is approximately 10 percent complete.
